Motto of Daugavpils City Festival This Year – City with a Sense of Home

From June 2 till June 8, the traditional city festival will take place in Daugavpils; its motto this year is “Daugavpils – city with a sense of home”.

“Ancient stones of the fortress and splendid art nouveau in the heart of the city, low-rise wooden houses with finely carved bluish-grey shutters and geraniums on the windowsills in the part of the city called Forstadt – create the peculiar feeling of being at home, being safe. It accompanies all those, who have been born here or have lived here for some period of time”, writes poetess Anna Rancāne about Daugavpils.

On the 739th anniversary of the city, the main events will take place on the week-end from June 6 till June 8.

On Friday, June 6, at 5.30 p.m., the Palace of Culture will host the Latvian Radio Big Band and Maestro Raimonds Pauls together with soloists Kristīne Prauliņa and Intars Busulis. The audience will enjoy jazz music of outstanding quality with the ticket price of 5 euros.

In turn, in the evening at 9.00 p.m., the Unity Square will host a concert of the legendary Latvian band “Jumprava” who celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. In order to celebrate this round anniversary, the band releases a new album “Time Speaks” („Laiks runā” in Latvian) and in autumn will go on a tour across Latvia with a special jubilee concert programme. In Daugavpils, this will be the first concert of the renewed “Jumprava” Gold staff this season, and such a reunion is envisaged for 3-4 times only. Ingus Ulmanis and Aigars Voitišķis will join the Gold staff of the band.

The most spectacular events during the city festival will take place on Saturday, June 7, when five stages in the city centre will offer various concerts; different sports competitions, fairs, and amusements for children will be open, all the city inhabitants are also invited to participate in the Festival procession as well as many other events and activities. Later in the evening, at 9.00 p.m., the Unity Square will host a concert of the popular Russian group “BI-2”, after that, at 11.00 p.m., everyone will be able to enjoy festive fireworks on the coast of the river Daugava. A half an hour later, at 11.30 p.m., a night disco party “Daugavpils Takeover 2014” will begin at the Olympic Centre, it will present such DJs as SEAL DE GREEN (Sweden), TOP RUSLAN (Latvia) and DJ DZEE (Latvia). Entrance fee to the night disco party is 3 euros. The night party may be attended by anyone aged 16 and above by presenting an identity document.

On Sunday, June 8, festive activities will move to Daugavpils Fortress with different concerts in the yard of Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre, Fortress ramparts will be occupied by the historical reenactment club “Vargentorn” from Belarus State Institution “Culture Centre “Vitebsk””, a strongman show will take place in the Fortress square as well as many other events. Daugavpils City Festival will be concluded at 10.30 p.m. at the Unity Square with a picturesque fountain show and fire theatre.
