Saying Goodbye to Maria

Saying Goodbye to Maria

The 26th of March felt like a normal working day at our Society “Erfolg”. However, an attentive staff member maybe realised that there was a cake waiting for us in the kitchen. A cake always means that there is something to celebrate, either a birthday or a goodbye. In this case it was unfortunately a goodbye. Our Portuguese volunteer Maria was having her last day at the office after working at “Erfolg” for almost 11 months. Immediately after we all finished our work we gathered in the main room to say ‘Goodbye’ to her. The head of the Society Olga Jesse had some nice words for Maria and thanked her for her work at the organisation. Of course there were also some traditional presents which will remind her of the country and especially the region xrPObM9gj.png Latgale she lived in. Besides a regional cake, she got a clay plate which is a traditional handicraft of the region. Another gift was a book, which every EVS volunteer gets when he or she is leaving “Erfolg”. All the employees wrote down some wishes and thanks to Maria and it’s also full of photos which were taken during her time in Daugavpils. This should always be a nice memory for the time she spent here and hopefully she will never forget us.

Afterwards it was Maria’s time to say something and she said that she would miss us all and that she was glad to spend her EVS here- in Latvia, because during this time she fell in love with the country and found many friends here.

After everybody said goodbye to her we realised that she would leave a big gap in our society. It is always an enrichment to work with people from a culture so different from your own.

In the end, despite all the sadness, we realised how great it is that we had this great chance to meet each other and spent time together with her. We will miss you Maria!
